Germany is sending illegal immigrants to Poland and the Netherlands, often without coordination with local authorities.

Between May 8 and June 30, German federal police turned away 6,193 migrants at the country’s land borders under new measures adopted by the government of conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Of those rejected, 285 were returned despite having expressed their intention to apply for asylum — a controversial measure introduced by Merz. A ruling by a Berlin court has already cast doubt on the legality of that policy.

Seventy-nine people classified as part of “vulnerable groups” were allowed to submit asylum applications on German soil. Police also announced the arrest of 274 suspected human traffickers and 1,517 individuals with outstanding warrants.

The figures were released the same day the Polish government announced it would reinstate border controls with Germany, following rising tensions in recent days over the returns.

“The countries neighboring Germany, such as Poland and the Netherlands, have a growing problem on their hand: the German federal police keep dumping illegal migrants in their territory, often without coordinating with local authorities and conducting the operations during the dead of the night,” the European Conservative reported.

“’The situation is dire. I will not remain indifferent to it after August 6th. I will certainly convene the Cabinet Council. I will want to learn all the statistical data regarding illegal migrants,’ said president-elect Karol Nawrocki,” it added.

On Tuesday, Chancellor Merz said that Germany does not summarily deport migrants who have already entered the country, countering accusations from Polish authorities, who refuse to take back individuals without proven evidence they passed through Poland.
